Service Overview

What you need to know

What it is

An air source heat pump (ASHP) extracts low-grade heat from outside air — even at -15°C — and upgrades it to usable temperatures (45–55°C) for radiators, underfloor heating and hot water. A typical home install includes the outdoor unit, indoor cylinder, smart controls, pipework upgrades and (where needed) radiator resizing.

Who it's for

Homes off the gas grid currently running on oil or LPG (biggest savings), households planning a new build or major refurbishment, owners of well-insulated homes looking to decarbonise, and anyone whose oil boiler is at end of life and who wants to qualify for the £7,500 BUS grant.

When you need it

Whenever your existing heating is due for replacement, during a major refurbishment, or when planning a new build. ASHPs are most cost-effective when fitted alongside loft and cavity insulation works — we'll tell you honestly if your home isn't ready yet.

Why professional matters

Heat pumps are the only domestic heating technology that produces more energy than they consume. A well-designed ASHP runs at a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of 3.5–4.5 — meaning every £1 of electricity yields £3.50–£4.50 of heat. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant of £7,500 brings the up-front cost to within touching distance of a high-end gas boiler.

What it costs to delay

The real consequences of putting it off

Heat pump installations are unforgiving of cut corners. A badly designed system can cost more to run than the oil boiler it replaced. Here is what poor specification looks like:

Undersized emitters

If radiators are too small for the lower flow temperatures, the home never reaches setpoint, the homeowner cranks the thermostat, the COP collapses and bills double.

Oversized heat pump

An oversized unit short-cycles, wears out compressors and underperforms in mild weather. The fix is correct heat-loss calculation, not bigger kit.

Missed BUS grant deadline

The £7,500 grant requires MCS certification, a heat-loss survey, EPC checks and grant submission inside specific windows. Miss them and you pay full price.

Inadequate hot water cylinder

ASHPs need an indirect cylinder with a much larger coil than a gas-fed cylinder. Reusing the old one means slow re-heat and disappointed showers.

Lost BUS grant on resale

An undocumented install can't transfer warranty or grant proof to a buyer, knocking thousands off resale value.

Common mistakes we fix

Treating ASHP like a boiler swap

It isn't. An ASHP is a designed system: heat-loss, emitter, pipework and control strategy must all be redesigned, not retrofitted.

Refusing radiator changes

About 60% of UK homes need 2–4 radiators upsized to run efficiently at 45°C. Skipping this is the #1 cause of post-install regret.

Choosing on price alone

A £6,000 cheaper quote almost always means single-stage compressor, smaller refrigerant charge, lower SCOP and £400+/yr more in electricity for the next 20 years.

Our Process

A predictable, engineered process

  1. STEP 01

    Pre-survey & EPC check

We confirm your EPC, current heating bills, fabric efficiency and BUS eligibility before we set foot in the house — saves you a wasted visit.

  2. STEP 02

    Full heat-loss survey

Room-by-room measurement: u-values, window areas, air-change rates. We model the home in MCS-compliant software and design the system to specific outputs.

  3. STEP 03

    Design pack & BUS submission

You receive a full design pack: heat pump model, cylinder spec, radiator schedule, pipework upgrades, SCOP estimate, predicted running costs, and the BUS grant application — submitted by us, not you.

  4. STEP 04

    Installation (typical 3–5 days)

Outdoor unit on noise-mounted plinth, indoor cylinder and controls, pipework upgrades, radiator changes, full system flush, refrigerant charging, commissioning.

  5. STEP 05

    Handover, monitoring & aftercare

Smart-control walkthrough, MCS certificate, BUS grant claimed and paid to you (or netted off the invoice), 12-month performance check, and remote monitoring on most units.

Why it pays off

Outcomes you can measure

MCS install via accredited partner

Heat pump installs are delivered via our accredited MCS partner installer, so you remain eligible for the £7,500 BUS grant. We don't currently process grant paperwork ourselves.

Bills cut by up to 50% vs oil

A well-designed ASHP running at SCOP 4.0 on the 7p Cosy Octopus tariff is around half the running cost of a 90% efficient oil boiler.

Decarbonised home

Up to 75% lower carbon emissions, climbing toward 100% as the UK grid greens further.

No gas, no oil, no flues

Free up an outhouse, reclaim a corner of the kitchen, and never take another oil delivery.

Cooling-ready (where specified)

Many models offer reversible cycle — gentle cooling in summer through the same emitters.

Quieter than a fridge

Modern inverter-driven units run at 40–48 dB at 1m — below conversation level.

The Engineering Detail

Under the bonnet

We design every heat pump from first principles. Here's the engineering reality you need to know:

How an ASHP actually works

Refrigerant in the outdoor unit evaporates at very low temperatures, absorbing heat from outside air. A compressor pressurises the gas, raising its temperature. The hot refrigerant transfers heat to your central heating water via a plate exchanger, then expands and cools, repeating the cycle. The 'COP' is the ratio of heat delivered to electricity consumed.

Brands we install

Mitsubishi Ecodan, Daikin Altherma, Vaillant aroTHERM plus and Samsung EHS — all monobloc R32 or R290 units. We are accredited installers for each, meaning extended warranties and direct technical support.

Sizing — the critical first decision

MCS requires a room-by-room heat-loss calculation using actual u-values and CIBSE temperature data for the Darlington area. We size to peak demand at -2°C external (the regional design temperature) and verify against measured oil/gas consumption from your last 12 months.

Emitter strategy

ASHPs run most efficiently at flow temperatures of 35–45°C. Existing radiators sized for an 80°C gas boiler are typically 40–60% undersized at 45°C. We will quote upsized radiators or, where feasible, switch a downstairs zone to underfloor heating for the lowest flow temperatures and highest SCOP.

Cylinder & hot water

ASHPs require an indirect unvented cylinder with a high-surface-area coil (3.0–4.0 m²). We install 200–300L cylinders depending on household size and incorporate a weekly anti-Legionella cycle automatically.

Tariffs and running cost

Pair the install with Octopus Cosy or Intelligent Octopus, which give 7p/kWh during off-peak windows. We program the heat pump to charge hot water and pre-heat the home during cheap windows, dropping running costs by another 20–30%.

Planning, noise & permitted development

Most domestic ASHPs fall under permitted development rules provided the unit is >1m from boundary and below 0.6 m³ in volume. We model the noise at boundary using MCS-020 calculations — your neighbours never hear it.
